RootsTech 2019 Updates & Stake Goals

Tuesday, February 12, 2019

It has been a crazy few months and in the last few weeks all this rain and snow we have received in the mountains has filled our lakes. Just the storm from almost 3 weeks ago, we got 12 inches of rain in about 3 days. I was so ready for the sun at that point.

I am still waiting to hear back from the stake presidency on approval of the stake goals in family history for this year. They have had a bit on their plate and President Garvin has been under the weather.

I won't present the goals for this year yet, but they are pretty much the same as last year. Just changed the terminology to the new terms that are now used in the church and the changes to the Elder's Quorum, Relief Society responsibilities and all of the other areas of these changes. I think they are all great changes to really stream line working with the Saints. And the 2 hour block, how exciting is that to have some extra time to work on family history work.

I did have a chance to talk with President Garvin and explained why didn't reach our goals for last year was because of all the changes with the leadership positions and ministering that the EQ and RS leaders really didn't have the time to work with us to meet our goals as they were making new assignments with ministering. He was totally understanding of that.

We also have a new high councilor over family history, Bro. Jenkins and we are excited to work together and with the wards too.

I want to touch on a few things, first off, how many of you are able to go to RootsTech in Salt Lake at the end of the month? Right off the bat, I'm jealous. :) Someday, it is just difficult for me to take time off of work during this time of year.

But RootsTech is doing something new this year which I think is fantastic. You can purchase an online package for $129 and you will have access to 20 classes for 12 months. Typically, they have some sessions we can watch for free online, including the speakers on Family Discovery Day that is usually on Saturday. Here is the link for the online package https://www.rootstech.org/salt-lake/virtual-pass-2019 I purchased it and can't wait to view. The videos will be available 10 days after RootsTech. Here is also the schedule for the Free Streaming Classes https://www.rootstech.org/salt-lake/live-stream-schedule

Another note about RootsTech, if you download the App, they will have the syllabus for each class on the app, you just download them or have them shared to your email. So you will have access to the handouts during the conference and they cost you anything. I don't believe that they will be available online, just the app.

If you ever need me to teach a class in your ward/branch, please don't hesitate to ask. We will just need to wait until the weather is better. I can teach at a Relief Society Activity, Youth Activity or the FH Consultants in your ward. Our main objective is take family names to the temple and as a bonus, learn about that family member before attending the temple. The church is really emphasizing temple and family history service more and more these days. And the online resources, I just feel I can't keep up sometimes.

Another reminder to use www.thefhguide.com FamilySearch endorses this website for training for FamilySearch and Family History overall. A great resource that shouldn't be overlooked. Use YouTube.com for family history too. The BYU Family History Library, Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, plus so much more, have channels that are filled with so much training material.

I hope that some of this information is helpful for you. Again, if there is anything that I or Bro. Jenkins can do for you, please let us know. We are here for you and the stake.

Keep warm and dry for the next bunch of storms that are coming.

Sis. Jill Holmes
Bro. Jenkins

PS: If you have been released from your calling and need to removed from this email group, please let me know. Or if there is a new called consultant, let me know that too.
